Representations of Towns in Ottoman Sea Charts of the Sixteenth Century and Their Relation to Mediterranean Cartography

The majority of cartography studies carried out during the Ottoman era was limited to Pîrî Reis maps and Kitâb-ı Bahriye for a certain period. The availability of new nautical charts during the Ottoman period necessitated in-depth examination and research of cartographic studies. These new naval charts also emphasize the importance of considering map drawings as a separate subject in the Ottoman Empire. This article examines the city depictions on nautical charts produced in the Ottoman capital in the 16th century and their relationship with European cartography. City depictions are discussed in terms of style and representation of the city, highlighting their similarities and differences with both contemporary Ottoman and European depictions and drawings.

16. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Deniz Haritalarında Kent Tasvirleri ve Bunların Akdeniz Haritacılığıyla İlişkisi

Osmanlı döneminde yapılan haritacılık çalışmalarının büyük çoğunluğunun belli bir süre Pîrî Reis haritaları ve Kitâb-ı Bahriye ile sınırlı kaldığı görülmektedir. Osmanlı döneminde yeni deniz haritalarının bulunması kartografik çalışmaların derinlemesine incelenmesini ve araştırılmasını gerekli kılmıştır. Gün ışığına çıkarılan bu yeni deniz haritaları, Osmanlı’da harita çizimlerinin ayrı bir konu olarak ele alınmasının önemini de vurgulamaktadır. Bu makale XVI. yüzyılda Osmanlı başkentinde üretilmiş deniz haritalarındaki kent tasvirlerini ve tasvirlerin Avrupa haritacılığıyla olan ilişkilerini incelemektedir. Kent tasvirleri üslup ve kenti betimleme bakımından ele alınmış olup hem çağdaşı Osmanlı hem de Avrupa tasvir ve çizimleriyle benzerlik ve farklılıklarına işaret edilmiştir
