The New World and Ottoman Geographers Information on the Discovery of the American Continent In 16th-century Ottoman Geographic Works
İlhami DanışAfter Columbus’s open sea adventure, the newly discovered world completely transformed the perception of the world known until the late 15th century. While the New World became subject to colonization by European states, it also began to change the destiny of the ancient world. On one side, with the resources of India and on the other hand, direct access by European states to the New World accelerated the enrichment of European states. In addition to all these aspects, the New World, discovered and named as America, caused a change in geographical knowledge and the conception of the world. New continents were added to maps, and information about this new continent was included in geographical works. This process certainly influenced geographical studies in the Ottoman world. Ottoman geographers who were informed about the new discoveries provided detailed information about both Columbus’s journey and the New World in the 16th century. The first map presented by Pîrî Reis to Yavuz Sultan Selim and the second map presented to Kanuni Sultan Süleyman stand out as the earliest dated data in the Ottoman world regarding the American continent. Following Pîrî Reis, Seydî Ali Reis and Emir Mehmed Suûdî provided information about the New World in their works. Moreover, we witness the existence of the American continent in maps and atlases from this century. This study aims to examine the content of the information about the American continent in 16th-century Ottoman geography works, their sources, and the impact of the discovery of the American continent on maps, and to investigate the geographical and cultural effects of this significant period.
Yeni Dünya ve Osmanlı Coğrafyacıları 16. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Coğrafya Eserlerinde Amerika Kıtası’nın Keşfine Dair Bilgiler
İlhami DanışKolomb’un açık deniz macerası sonrası keşfedilen Yeni Dünya (Amerika) 15. yüzyıl sonlarına kadar bilinen dünya algısını tamamen değiştirmiştir. Yeni Dünya, Avrupa kıtasındaki devletlerin sömürgesine maruz kalırken, bilinen kadim dünyanın kaderini de farklı bir yola sürüklemeye başlamıştır. Hindistan’ın ve Yeni Dünyanın kaynaklarına doğrudan erişim, Avrupalı devletlerin hızla zenginleşmesini sağlamıştır. Bütün bu hususların yanında Yeni Dünya, coğrafi bilginin ve dünya tasavvurunun değişmesine sebep olmuş, bu keşif sonunda haritalara Amerika kıtası eklenmiş, coğrafi eserlere de bu yeni kıtaya dair bilgiler dahil edilmeye başlanmıştır. Bu süreç, Osmanlı dünyasındaki coğrafi çalışmalara da etki etmiştir. Yeni keşiflerden haberdar olan Osmanlı coğrafyacıları hem Kolomb’un yolculuğuna hem de Amerika’ya dair 16. yüzyılda detaylı bilgiler aktarmaktadırlar. Pîrî Reis’in Yavuz Sultan Selim’e takdim ettiği ilk harita ile Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’a takdim ettiği ikinci harita, Amerika kıtasına dair Osmanlı dünyasındaki en eski tarihli veriler olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Pîrî Reis’ten sonra Seydî Ali Reis, Emir Mehmed Suûdî eserlerinde Amerika’ya dair bilgiler vermektedir. Ayrıca bu yüzyıldaki harita ve atlaslarda da Amerika kıtasının yer aldığı görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada 16. yüzyıl Osmanlı coğrafya eserlerindeki Amerika kıtasına dair bilgilerin muhtevasına, bu bilgilerin kaynaklarına, Amerika kıtasının keşfinin haritalar üzerindeki etkisine yer verip bu önemli dönemin coğrafi ve kültürel etkilerini incelemek hedeflenmektedir.
