Miletus as a Political City and the Occurrence of Philosophy
Özgüç GüvenIn this article, the conditions that led to the occurrence of philosophy in Miletus will be discussed. The argument we will put forward is that the fact that Miletus was a political city enabled the development of philosophical thought. We define political city as a city where there is a field of speech and rights, a relationship of mutual recognition between competing classes, where sovereignty is shared, and open to change. In this respect, in our study, we try to reveal the historical conditions that made Miletus a political city and make clear the balanced distribution of sovereignty and reveal how this ground has changed the understanding of the universe. Considering that the history of civilization has developed through hybridization, Miletus is a city that absorbs and transcends the accumulation of Mediterranean, Anatolian, Mesopotamian and the surrounding civilizations. The accumulation that came together in Miletus has led to the criticism of the understanding of the universe based on aristocratic values and myths over time. The handling of this historical background in a context that allows new interpretations is related to the political ground. Thus, cosmos is theorized through the accumulation obtained from production processes. The important reason for this accumulation is the commodity trade carried out by Miletos. In our research within this framework, we will first establish the political city-police connection. By listing the characteristics of the police, we will discuss the political rights that emerge here. Then we will talk about the history of Ionia to mark the conditions under which these rights exist in Ionia. From here on, we will discuss Miletus and specify its politicaleconomic and cultural characteristics. In this way, we will argue that the emergence of philosophy should be treated as the movement of material and cultural accumulation to a new stage rather than the awakening of a community or the product of a mere genius.
Politik Bir Kent Olarak Miletos ve Felsefenin Ortaya Çıkışı
Özgüç GüvenÇalışmamızda Miletos’ta felsefenin ortaya çıkışını sağlayan koşulları tartışıyoruz. Öne süreceğimiz sav, Miletos’un politik bir kent oluşunun felsefi düşüncenin gelişmesini sağladığıdır. Politik kenti konuşma alanı ve hakların bulunduğu, çekişen kesimler arasında karşılıklı tanınma bağıntısının kurulduğu, egemenliğin bölüşüldüğü, değişime açık kent olarak tanımlıyoruz. Bu bakımdan çalışmamızda Miletos’un politik bir kent olmasını sağlayan tarihsel koşulları ve iktidarın dengeli bölüşümünü serimleyerek bu zeminin evrene bakışı nasıl değiştirdiğini ortaya koyuyoruz. Uygarlık tarihinin melezlenme yoluyla geliştiği göz önünde tutulduğunda Miletos Akdeniz, Anadolu, Mezopotamya ve çevre uygarlıkların birikimini özümseyip, aşan bir kenttir. Miletos’ta bir araya gelen birikim, zamanla aristokratik değerler ve mitlere dayalı evren anlayışlarının eleştirisini sağlamıştır. Söz konusu tarihsel birikimin yeni yorumlara izin veren bir bağlamda ele alınması ise politik zeminle ilgilidir. Böylece üretim süreçlerinden elde edilen birikim yoluyla kosmos kuramsallaştırılır. Bu birikimin önemli nedeni Miletos’un gerçekleştirdiği meta ticaretidir. Söz konusu çerçevede çalışmamızda ilkin politik kent-polis bağını kuracağız. Polisin özelliklerini sıralayarak, burada ortaya çıkan politik hakları konu edeceğiz. Ardından söz konusu hakların Ionia’da bulunmasını sağlayan koşulları imlemek için Ionia’nın tarihinden söz edeceğiz. Buradan sonra Miletos’u ele alarak politik-ekonomik, kültürel özelliklerini açımlayacağız. Böylelikle felsefenin ortaya çıkışının bir topluluğun uyanışı ya da salt bir dehanın ürünü olarak görülmesindense maddi ve kültürel birikimin yeni bir aşamaya taşınması olarak ele alınmasını savunacağız.
