The City: Literary Encounters
The Images of Moscow and Saint Petersburg in L.n. Tolstoy’s War and Peace
Kamile Sinem KüçükMoscow, which was founded by Knyaz Yuri Dolgorukiy in 1147 and has been home to Russian people for centuries, and Saint Petersburg, which was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, have very different images. In time, Saint Petersburg became more western oriented and Moscow came to represent the Russian soul and their people have held diverse opinions on history of thought, literature, art etc. throughout history. In this context, it is observed that the residents of Moscow and Saint Petersburg have different worldviews. In addition to their language, the way they speak, their traditions, their beliefs, and their daily lives are shaped by the cities in which they live. In line with these views, War and Peace by Tolstoy, with its hundreds of characters, depicts the residents of Moscow and Saint Petersburg before and after the War of 1812. The novel, which includes historical information, reveals different identities of these two cities, each with their own particular perspectives, especially in the ways in which they experience war in the 19th century. The present study aims to examine the cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg through the mindset of their residents in Tolstoy’s War and Peace and uncover the meanings attributed to these important cities by contemplating a literary masterpiece.
L.N. Tolstoy’un Savaş ve Barış Adlı Eserinde Moskova ve Peterburg İmgesi
Kamile Sinem Küçük1147 yılında Knyaz Yuri Dolgoruki tarafından kurulan tarihe yüzyıllarca tanıklık etmiş Moskova ve 1703 yılında Çar I. Petro tarafından kurulan Sankt-Peterburg kentleri birbirlerinden oldukça farklı imgelere sahiptir. Yüzünü Batı’ya dönen Peterburg ve kendi özünü savunan Moskova tarih boyunca düşünce tarihi, edebiyat, sanat vb. alanlarda birbirinden farklı görüşleri destekleyen iki kent haline gelir. Bu bağlamda Moskova ve Peterburg sakinlerinin farklı dünya görüşlerine sahip olduğu; dillerinin, konuşma biçimlerinin, geleneklerinin, inançlarının ve de gündelik yaşamlarının yaşadıkları kente göre şekillendiği gözlemlenmektedir. Bu görüşler doğrultusunda Tolstoy’un Savaş ve Barış (Voyna i mir) adlı eseri içerdiği yüzlerce karakterle Moskova ve Peterburg sakinlerini 1812 Vatan Savaşı öncesinde ve sonrasında gözler önüne serer. Tarihi bilgiler içeren eser, kendilerine özgü dünyaları olan bu iki kentin 19. yüzyıldaki konumuna tanıklık edilmesine neden olur. Çalışmanın amacı Tolstoy’un Savaş ve Barış adlı eserinde Moskova ve Peterburg kentlerini sakinleri aracıyla ele almak ve (bu iki önemli kente) yüklenen anlamları bir edebiyat eseri aracılığıyla açığa çıkarmaktır.
