The City: Literary Encounters
From Space to Language: the Fragmentation Paradigm of Holism
Tekin BudakoğluSome artists recreate space according to their own aesthetic perceptions. Socio-cultural elements such as history, which is a continuous process, time, and tradition form the background of this recreation. The artist perceives the space, which gains continuity with the penetration of these factors, and creates his or her aesthetics with a holistic perspective. On the other hand, with the beginning of modernity, it was necessary to dissolve that these socio-cultural elements that have power to rebuild collective memory and to revolutionize social relations in order to disrupt the concept of continuity, social dynamics formed according to the influence of money caused to make the bounds of morality disappear. This disintegration, which begins on the social level and transcends the identities of individuals, develops a different perspective in terms of space. In fact, when it comes to space, modernity has set itself to be holistic as opposed to fragmented. The ultimate aim of modernity in this paradoxical perspective is to establish an open system in which the monetary cycle will never disappear, attempting to strengthen its own existence. In this period, the perception of power is transformed as well. The system, which gives priority to the principles of power, centralization, and integrity in the modern era, changes the identity and establishes its power on a slippery ground in the “liquid-modern” era, as Zygmunt Bauman put it. The division and disintegration in elements such as history, identity, and time bring with it the breaks in the consciousness of the artist, who tries to capture the spirit of the city completely, and ultimately the codes of the literary text in the liquid-modern era are determined. In fact, in the traditional understanding ofliterary products that became meaningless in thisunbounded cycle, language possibilities increased and gained importance in textual relations became more evident. This study, which is based on the texts of thinkers such as Marshall Berman, Zygmunt Bauman, Marshall McLuhan and David Harvey, explains that it is difficult but not impossible for the artist to grasp the city as a whole in modern times.
