Remote Health Management and Telemedicine in Cardiac Surgery

Nilgün BozbuğaMurat Uğurlucan

Remote health management contributes to the improvement of health with personal health management, protection of health with preventive medicine practices and increasing the level of health literacy. Remote healthcare applications including tele-medicine provide convenience to decrease the workload at the hospitals and provide support whom seek care however unable to reach due to overload at the facilities. Tele-health is a more comprehensive term that includes clinical processes related to diagnosis, treatment and tele-monitoring related to remote patient management, as well as non-clinical processes such as personal health records, health management, tele-mentoring, and health education. The monitoring of vital values transmitted by wearable technology or smart devices carrying physiological signal sensors is transmitted to health centers and recorded in real time, with the integration of the web portal of the data obtained independently of the location. Cardiovascular diseases account for the highest mortality rates globally, therefore continuous monitoring of cardiovascular vital signs for early intervention is highly desired. Remote patient monitoring systems, advances in wearable technologies and tele-medicine are emerging as an important innovative approach to address the early problems of patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases. Early intervention is provided in the emergence of acute adverse conditions with the participation of patients what to do in the onset of symptoms or possible changes in vital signs. Especially the peak phases of the COVID-19 pandemics had been a test drive for tele-medicine and remote healthcare which also accelerated and expanded their use globally In this chapter we present remote health management and tele-medicine applications in the field of cardiac surgery.
