Innovation Management in Healthcare: Innovative Products and Services

Zümrüt Ecevit Satı

Healthcare innovation includes innovations in health care, as well as innovations that impose very different meanings to prevent disease and promote health and well-being. These innovations can be in the form of new products, services, processes, organizations, or policies. Successfully initiating a new technological innovation requires the development of complementary technologies, new business models, new processes, new roles or policy changes for patients and clinicians. Innovation in health care is increasingly important to successfully deliver health care at a lower cost to a growing number of patients. Each country has its own health and innovation system with different characteristics, but they often face similar technological, sociological, systemic, and legal challenges. Health institutions, research centers, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical research and production organizations, patients and patient associations play a different role in developing, sharing, and collaborating in innovation in the field of health. Health entrepreneurs are also willing to join and develop this system and are trying new ways to promote innovation in many health systems. The health care sector faces a growing share of aging populations, chronic diseases, outbreaks, genetic common diseases, and mental diseases in most countries. The emergence of new technologies, the increase in consumer mobile and smart device use, digital data processing methods, software, and the proliferation of open-source applications present new conditions to the fore. These technologies provide more patient power as well as better accessibility, further increasing the demand for better treatments. This section discusses the health management approach shaped by innovation management to meet new expectations in the current health sector, the innovation organization and process in the healthcare, the elements of success, and the development of innovative products and services.
