Utopia and Dystopia in German Literature and Film
A Comparative Perspectives on the Skatepark Located in Turkey and Germany Through Foucault’s Notion of Heterotopia
Hüseyin Melih ÖzdemirGeography, as a field of science, researches with a focal point of place and people. The notion of ‘place’ has been addressed in various ways, deriving from the axis of emerging paradigms over time. There exist places where the urban settlements are harbouring within themselves. The Aforementioned places affect the lives of people in multifarious positive and negative ways or meanings. Daily life has a dynamic and a flow to itself. People often struggle to differentiate the events that occur during the flow of daily life or places where these events occur throughout the day. The places of heterotopia conversely have different dynamics, unlike the flow of ordinary dayto-day life. Nowadays, the usage of vehicles such as roller skates, skateboards and bicycles has increased tremendously. Factors such as the enlargement of urban settlement areas and the increase in traffic density necessitate building areas only for the usage of these vehicles. Presently, practices such as cycle paths have been applied in different cities of the world. However, more distinctive places were required for the seekers of adrenalin and acrobatics. The making of these skateparks stemmed from the need to answer the demands of the people who require such places. There are numerous areas organized in the same fashion in the world. There are seven major skateparks in Germany as well. The skateparks, which are distributed to cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Berlin, are examples of heterotopia through the user profiles and the meaning attributed by the users to the places. The Maltepe Skatepark located in the Maltepe Coastal Park, and the seven major skateparks located in different locations in Germany demonstrate qualities that are separate from day-to-day life. This study examines the potential of Maltepe Skatepark and seven major skateparks in Germany to form an example of heterotopia.
