Social Impact Assessments in Volunteering
Büşra Turan TüylüoğluSocial impact is an important concept that allows for an understanding of the possible consequences of volunteering activities to be developed. This concept provides a critical approach not only to volunteering activities but also to any plan, project, program, or policy that concerns a society or communities, and plays a key role in understanding what the activities carried out or planned to be realized actually mean for the relevant society/communities. Social impact assessment has come to the fore in the field of volunteering and civil society in recent years and is the main way of concretely demonstrating the social impact these activities have and are able to create. Social impact assessment refers to an analysis process that, by structuring all kinds of activities that concern society and/or communities, makes obtaining the maximum benefit from these activities and minimizing the possible losses that appear during these activities possible. This chapter will discuss the concept of social impact and social impact assessment, the methods and ways social impact can be evaluated, and the benefits and limitations of these assessments; it will also discuss the role social impact assessment has in volunteering and emphasize the points that need to be considered when making a social impact assessment.
