East Taurus Petroglyphs: Tırşin Plateau and Its Surroundings

Forms of rock art, depicted on cave walls or large rocks and made with various techniques since the prehistoric periods, are widespread in many regions of the world. Among these regions, Anatolia bears various examples of rock art and researches conducted over the last years have increased the number of such examples. Despite the debates over issues of dating, symbolism, and the meanings behind the depictions, rock art research concentrates on culture and cognition and evaluates it as a cultural marker. Therefore, the state and distribution of rock art in Eastern Anatolia, a region less well known especially in terms of prehistoric periods comparing to the rest of Anatolia, is of importance for contributing to the regional chronology. It is with such an aim that this study concentrates on the poorly researched highlands of the Van-Hakkari region connected to the Taurus mountain range, to the south of Lake Van. The study consisted of documenting the rock art examples in the region and the discovery of new rock art depictions. This article is a product of this study and evaluates the petroglyphs located in the Tırşin plateau and Baltutan village.

Doğu Toros Petroglifleri: Tırşin Yaylası ve Çevresi

Tarihöncesi dönemden itibaren farklı teknikler ile kaya üzerine ya da mağara duvarlarına yapılmış kaya resimleri dünyanın birçok bölgesinde görülmektedir. Son yıllarda yoğunlaşan çalışmalar ile birlikte Anadolu’daki kaya resimlerinin sayısı da artmaktadır. Hem kültürel hem de bilişsel bağlamda incelenen kaya resimleri yapılış sebepleri, sembolizma, tarihlendirme gibi hususlarda tartışılmaya devam edilse de önemli bir kültür belirteci olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu sebeple kaya resimlerinin, tarihöncesi dönemleri halen Anadolu’nun geri kalanına kıyasla az bilinen Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi’ndeki niteliği ve dağılımı, özellikle bölge kronolojisine sağlayabileceği katkılar açısından oldukça önemlidir. Bu bağlamda, bu çalışma şimdiye dek az araştırılmış bir bölge olan Van Gölü Havzasının güney kısmını içeren ve Toros Dağ sırasına bağlı olan Van -Hakkari dağlık bölgesine yoğunlaşmaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında bölgedeki kaya resimlerinin bir kısmı belgelenmiş ve yeni kaya resmi örnekleri tespit edilmiştir. Bu makalede, Tırşin Yaylası ve çevresi ayrıca Baltutan Köyü’nde yer alan çizim tekniği (petroglif) ile yapılmış kaya resimleri ele alınmıştır
