Coronavirus: General Features and Current Approach

Sevim MeşeAli Ağaçfidan

The virus, which was isolated from the pneumonia cases in Wuhan City in Hubei Province of China for the first time in December 2019 and determined to be from the Coronaviridae family, was called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Genetic analysis of SARS-CoV-2, originating from zoonotic like other coronaviruses, indicates that it has the same origin as bat coronavirus populations. Since there is usually limited contact between humans and bats, the transmission of the virus to humans is more likely to occur through another animal species that is more likely to be contacted. This intermediate host can be a pet, a wild animal or a domesticated wild animal, but has not yet been identified. In this article, structural and epidemiological features of coronaviruses are examined and current developments about SARS-CoV-2, which take over the world, are evaluated.
