Approach to an Anemic Child

Anemia is defined as a reduction in red cell counts, blood hemoglobin concentration or hematocrit per cubic millimeter. Initial diagnostic approach to the anemic patient includes a detailed history, physical examination and primary laboratory tests. The blood smear, direct Coombs test and reticulocyte counts are very helpful diagnostic tools in anemia.
