Library 4.0: New Generation Technologies in Libraries

Gülten Alır Derbent

Libraries have been institutions that have not only been influenced by information and communication technologies, but also have shaped users’ relationships with these technologies. Library 4.0 is a concept that defines the impact of “smart technologies” on libraries in the near future, and it is still being developed and discussed. This study examines the historical impact of information and communication technologies on library services within the context of the Library 4.0 concept, as well as the roles of users and librarians in the new generation of libraries. The impact and usage areas of creative spaces, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, block chain technology and internet of things technologies, which come to the fore with the concept of Library 4.0, on library services were evaluated. These technologies provide libraries with opportunities to enhance user experience, improve user knowledge and skills, attract young users to the library, remove digital divide, and provide personalized services to users. However, there also some challenges that need to be overcome, such as employment of librarians, development of digital skills of librarians and users, ethical issues, and inclusion of relevant information assets into library collections and services. In order for libraries to continue their existence as a social service institution that provides information sources and services to users, and as a social and technological meeting place for users, it is necessary for them to be able to respond to users’ changing information behaviors and to adopt a proactive approach to Library 4.0 technologies.
