Inventory of Research on Surfactants and Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the Sea of Marmara, Türki̇ye

Esra Billur Balcıoğlu İlhan

The Sea of Marmara within the Turkish Straits System (TSS), an international waterway, is under intense pressure from oil pollution due to maritime transport. In addition, since it is the region being the most populated, the increase in anionic surfactant concentrations due to discharges also causes a threat to the ecosystem in the Sea of Marmara. Both anthropogenic petroleum hydrocarbons and anionic surfactant compounds are pollutants with toxic effects for the marine environment. There are many quantitative studies that reveal pollution throughout the Turkish Straits System, including the Istanbul and Çanakkale Straits, since past years. The continuity of these studies is important in order to reveal the pollution level of this region. In this chapter, pollution determination studies carried out in different environments (water sediment-biota) throughout the Sea of Marmara summarized and the importance and necessity of subsequent pollution monitoring studies for this region are evaluated.
