Non- Indigenous Marine Species in the Sea of Marmara
Bayram ÖztürkThe Sea of Marmara is one of the busiest waterways in the world because of the intense shipping activities between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea basins. Over 100 Non-Indigenous species (NIS) have been found in the small inland sea of Türkiye and the number of species is increasing. Origin of the most NIS in the Sea of Marmara is not Lessepsian, contrary to those in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, pufferfish species and other alien invasive Lessepsian species have been found in the Sea of Marmara. Eradication measures, implementation of ship ballast water management, public awareness and outhreach campaigns can be useful for combatting against NIS species in the Sea of Marmara.
