Patronage of Western Music in the Ottoman Palace: The Case of Guatelli Pasha

Patronage of art can be observed throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire. Callisto Guatelli is one of the most important Western musicians who served in the Ottoman Palace in the 19th century, the most critical period regarding the Westernization of the Ottoman Empire. This study discusses art patronage during the aforementioned period in the case of Guatelli Pasha. This article examines the relationship between patron and patronized in the case of Guatelli Pasha and reveals various aspects of the presence of a Western musician in the Ottoman Court. Furthermore, this chapter contains information on how the members of the Ottoman dynasty patronized Western musicians in the Ottoman court and their expectations from this relationship. Finally, the position and situation of Guatelli Pasha amongst the dignitaries of the Ottoman Court are discussed to show the position and situations of the Western musicians at the Ottoman Court in general.
