Gender Equality as a Sustainable Development Goal: Women’s Participation in Decision-Making Mechanisms in Türki̇ye

Global institutions recognize gender equality as a human right, a necessity, and an indicator of sustainable development. Türkiye accepted Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality (SDG 5) in 2015. In this context, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the significance of gender equality as a development goal in the case of Türkiye, especially by demonstrating the participation of women. This section will provide a comprehensive overview of the current state, progress, and challenges regarding gender equality and women’s representation in Türkiye, analyzing the data and conducting theoretical research. The challenges and barriers that hinder women’s representation in decision-making processes in Türkiye include societal norms, cultural biases, discriminatory practices, and structural barriers. This section will identify successful strategies, policies, and initiatives to promote gender equality and enhance women’s representation while reviewing the literature and indicators used in international institutions (UNDP, UN Women). This study offers valuable insights into the progress of and gaps in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for the 2030 Agenda, which require SDG 5 gender equality parameters, taking into account representation in decision-making mechanisms. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing gender equality in the country and provide a foundation for further research and policy development.
