Green Practices and Responsible Consumption by the Hotel Industry in Türki̇ye: a Qualitative Study on Hotel Managers
Büşra Kesici, Mert Öğretmenoğlu, Gürkan ÇalışkanTourism has long been realized as an essential contributor to economic growth and development, generating jobs and income in many regions of the world. Recent developments in the field of sustainable tourism have emphasized the significant links between tourism and the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, numerous studies have been carried out on sustainability and tourism. Despite the popularity of sustainability and tourism, more studies are needed to fully understand sustainability in the field of tourism and hospitality. Thus, this book chapter aims to determine hotels’ green practices and their responsible consumption, called “hotels’ eco-friendly behaviors”. In this context, semi-structured interview forms were applied to the managers working in various departments of hotels, and the obtained data were analyzed by content analysis. As a result, four main components of hotels’ green practices and their responsible consumption were revealed: recycling, energy-saving, training, and encouragement and preferring sustainable products. This book chapter substantially contributes to sustainable tourism literature by providing a deep understanding of hotels’ green practices and responsible consumption. Moreover, this book chapter can increase the knowledge level of service providers about green practices.
