The Ukraine-Russia War and its Relationship with Climate Change
Metin DoğanIn recent years, many new strategies have been prepared to solve the problem of climate change. In this context, the European Union stands out the most. While the European Union has been working for the announcement and solution of the problem on the international platform since the 1990s, it put forward the European Green Deal strategy in 2019. It pledged to become a carbon-neutral continent by 2050. New environmental strategies followed the European Green Deal strategy in other countries. However, the Ukraine-Russia War has created a crisis that could trigger many problems related to climate change and negatively affect the strategies put forward. Climate change is associated with many problems, including the environment, energy, food, and migration. Prolonging this ongoing war in Ukraine will deepen these problems and make it more difficult to find a global solution to climate change. Therefore, this study evaluates the relationship of the Ukraine-Russia War with issues such as environment, energy, and food. This war will reduce the chances of success of climate change strategies, especially the European Green Deal, because the resources that could be used for climate change will be used to mitigate the effects of the war. In addition, the European Union’s stopping the purchase of natural gas from Russia and turning to alternative energy sources and countries will cause the European Union’s carbon emissions to increase. The pollution caused by the war will make the problem of climate change even more unsolvable.
