Lexicographic studies provide a foundation for understanding the depth of poetic texts, allowing for a critical and comprehensive analysis of them. This paper examines the poetic lexicon in Sayyid Qutb’s poem “The Poet in the Valley of the Dead,” aiming to uncover his literary characteristics and the variety of his stylistic approaches and areas of influence. Recognized as an essential reference for many modern writers in the Islamic world, Qutb’s work is introduced with a brief background on both the poet and the poem, followed by an exploration of the poem’s context and main theme. A detailed interpretation of each verse provides readers with insight into its thematic essence, providing the groundwork for an in-depth lexical analysis. Key terms within the text were identified and classified into four primary semantic fields: Death (with terms like “death,” “graves,” “tombs”), Life (including “life,” “soul,” “breath”), Place (such as “world,” “universe,” “destinies”), and Time (like “nights,” “darkness,” “gloom”). This study investigates these terms’ lexical and contextual meanings, their semantic relationships, and how Qutb employed them to enhance the poem’s depth. The paper concludes with a set of findings that encapsulate the poet’s unique approach and semantic mastery.
