(Re)considering Turkish Theatre in the Republic’s Centenary was prepared to pay tribute to the memories of our invaluable master academicians, who have contributed greatly to the shaping of the history of our theatre and our collective theatrical memory, and who are no longer with us. Following in the footsteps of books written for important anniversaries such as 50 Years of Turkish Theatre and Turkish Theatre in the 75th Year of the Republic, the aim was to assess the 100th anniversary with a focus on the republic’s theatre history and leave a lasting source for future generations to celebrate upcoming anniversaries.
However, a different approach was taken in the shaping of this book compared to previous ones. First, instead of the usual chronological historiography, thematic headings that could be considered vital in defining the characteristics of theatre were selected for research. In this way, section titles such as Stages-Troupes-Audiences, Education-Institutionalization, Genres-Repertoires, and Tradition-Transition emerged. For each section, an effort was made to focus on topics that had not been sufficiently explored or addressed previously under those thematic headings in theatre research. On the other hand, in order to increase the international recognition of Turkish theatre among researchers and to expand international publications on Republican Theatre, it was decided to publish the book in English.
The book in your hands came to life thanks to the patient support of our dear researcher colleagues who responded to the collective production call made by the Department of Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy at Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, and it was finalized with their contributions. |
