COVID-19: Are There Lessons to be Learned from History?

Gönül Şengöz

The coronavirus infectious disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARSCoV-2), started in China and spread around the world. It was initially perceived as viral pneumonia. But as the process progressed, it was understood that it was progressing with a cytokine storm, macrophage activation syndrome, and multiple organ failure. The disease is fatal in the elderly and those with underlying disease. The frightening aspect of the disease is the lack of drugs and vaccines for specific treatment and prevention. It is not yet possible to predict how long, how intense and how severe the outbreak will be over time. This pandemic is neither the first nor the last health crisis to deeply affect the world. The pandemic will cause permanent changes in our lifestyle. Due to COVID-19, social, economic and cultural developments, and changes will accelerate or slow down. This pandemic will result in many new experiences, developments and innovations in the medical field. Lessons learned from the outbreak will form our roadmap until a new unknown. COVID-19 has emerged as a threat to the world. In the post pandemic period, changes will occur in the world. It is estimated that a long time will be needed to control this outbreak. In fact, we need mechanisms to anticipate biological threats that await humanity after this outbreak.
