Art and politics have been intertwined throughout history. In periods where the artist’s livelihood was distant from material compensation, especially in eras where reaching the resources necessary for their art was impossible, many times having a patron for the artist was crucial. Powerful figures and rulers enhanced both their spheres of influence and the places they governed with the opportunities they provided to artists, making their cities and countries more magnificent through the beauty created by art. This influence manifested in various forms, from the construction of grandiose spaces to the music played by orchestras within these spaces. Throughout history, it is evident that this patronage relationship has evolved, with artists hosted in palaces taking on state duties and becoming part of a different form of patronage. Even today, the existence of art patronage continues to be an integral part of the system in various forms.
As academics working in the fields of art and politics, we aim to focus on the period covered by Ottoman-Turkish modernization, which is our area of academic study. With our colleague Federica Nardella, we edited the compiled book titled “The Relationship between Art and Politics in the 19th Century Ottoman Empire: Institutionalization, Change and Continuity” in 2021. This book had serious attention in the field and afterward we considered compiling a book that focuses on the artists of that era, exploring those who were part of the changing patronage relationships reconstructed through modernization and finding places within bureaucratic structures. This compilation aims to shed light on their roles and contributions within this evolving patronage system. We have chosen several renowned musicians who were involved in the Ottoman bureaucracy, and we have also directed our attention to lesser-known musicians. We believe that this particular focus is one of the key features of our book. Generally, ordinary musicians are not commonly highlighted as subjects in books, and we aim to address this gap through our work.
