The first years of the 20th century hold a special place in Turkish-Polish relations, which date back to the 15th century, since both countries experienced radical changes and transformations during this period. While Poland regained independence in 1918, the Ottoman Empire, which had finished World War I on the defeated side, faced invasions. The national struggle movement that began under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha culminated in the establishment of the new Turkish state. Relations between Türkiye and Poland were established on a solid foundation with the Friendship Treaty signed in Lausanne on July 23, 1923, a few months before the declaration of the Republic of Türkiye. In the following period, contacts continued to develop in different areas. World War II and the subsequent Cold War mark periods with different characters for the two countries. With Poland’s transition to democracy in 1989, cooperation in many areas of bilateral relations once again emerged. It can be said that these contacts continue to nourish relations and draw a vibrant panorama to this day.
However, the studies on bilateral relations in the last century are less numerous than the studies of previous centuries. The centennial of the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye and the TurkishPolish Friendship Treaty in Lausanne provided an opportunity to conduct more scientific studies on the period between 1923 and 2023, and this book was prepared on this occasion. On October 10, 2023, a conference was held in Warsaw, hosted by the Turkish Embassy and with the contributions of Istanbul University. The scientific texts of the conference were edited and are presented to the academic world in this book. The book includes chapters that evaluate bilateral relations from different aspects in the light of new documents and information. In this respect, it is the first comprehensive work written in English on Turkish-Polish relations in the 20th and 21st centuries. On this occasion, I would like to thank our authors and reviewers who contributed to the book as well as our Rector, Prof. Dr. Osman Bülent Zülfikar and His Excellency Ambassador Rauf Alp Denktaş, who honoured the book with their valuable support and forewords. I would also like to thank Istanbul University Press for their help in publishing this book. I hope that the book will contribute to the scientific world and form the basis for advanced research.
