A Method Suggestion for Examining Old Maps

Nazan Karakaş Özür

The map is a fundamental element for the study of geography. The activity of drawing on paper, which correspondsto a concept, has a function far beyond its meaning. Throughout the history of humanity, drawing, which is a third language apart from speaking and writing, has facilitated the display and transmission of many kinds of information. As a drawing activity, the map has followed a developmental line over time, and a unique expression language has been developed. However, the purpose of use of maps has not changed much in essence. Mankind has always used maps to describe the earth, also loaded many other information into this description. Large amount of geographic information could be transferred to reasonably sized planar surfaces using drawing and representation techniques on maps. Thus, it has become both a useful tool in the description of the earth and a practical tool in storing information. Apart from the features of the maps in the field of science, they also have important places in the artistic, psychological, social, and political dimensions. Maps, which are also a part of the history of geography, are known as important evidence in periodical studies. For this reason, it is necessary to examine them using certain criteria according to their various characteristics.
