Mehmet Akif and National Anthem on the 100th Anniversary of Its Adoption
Some Notes on the Turkish National Anthem: An Evaluation of the National Anthem Based on Its First Two Quartets
Muharrem DayançOfficially approved by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the hard days of the Turkish nation’s struggle for survival in the first quarter of the twentieth century (March 12, 1921), the Turkish National Anthem was born from a process where the fate of the Turkish War of Independence was not yet known. Hence, it is possible to see the repercussions of this nationwide uncertainty in the anthem. Public reputation of the poet, as well as the poem’s content and style mirroring its time, significantly helped clear away the negative atmosphere at the time. Robust bonds with the past, correct assessment of the period, as well as constructive and accurate foresights also played a role in this reparative impact. The poem’s holistic view encompassing the past, present, and future also facilitated its adoption in time as the “text of national consensus”. When evaluated in terms of form and content, this poem, which has the qualities of a “national anthem”, deserves special attention as it contains the pronoun “I” instead of “we” and reflects the spirit of the era with an objective point of view. Again, the text is genuine in that it is built on religious and national basic concepts/values.
