Mehmet Akif and National Anthem on the 100th Anniversary of Its Adoption
Different Faces of Western Civilization in Mehmet Akif Ersoy
Hasan AydınMehmet Akif Ersoy (1873-1936) is the famous poet, author and intellectual of the Ottoman empire and the poet of the national anthem of Turkey. As it’s known, he lived at a time when the Ottoman empire and parts of the Islamic world were being divided and fiercely attacked by western national powers. During his life, after the first world war the Ottoman empire was destroyed, and then, the Republic of Turkey was established with challenges. In this process, Akif became a member of the Ottoman special organization Teşkilât-ı Mahsusa and traveled a lot of countries in the West and the East, and experienced their current conditions of economic, political, scientific, technologic and moral life, and then compared eastern and western civilizations with each other. In his traveling, he observed that the western civilization far more advanced than the eastern civilization in science and technology. This article deals with Ersoy's dialectical and meta-critical discourse on Western civilization. Akif puts forward a dual discourse on Western civilization on the axis of his historical observations and experiences. The essence of his discourse is that the West in the books and the real/de facto West are different from each other. The West in books is fascinating in terms of human values but the real/de facto West is not like that at all. The real/de facto West is hostile to Islam, scheming, destructive, ruthless and colonialist. But, the same West is the pioneer in the material aspect of Western civilization; that is, it is advanced in science and technology. With these determinations, Akif, to put it in philosophical language, has seen and experienced the split between ideal and reality. While deciphering the moral problems in the real West, he has appreciated its success in science, art and technique.
