Economic, Social and Cultural Relations Between the Republic of Turkey and Albania

Turkish-Albanian relations were established immediately after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Between the years 1923 and 1938, the new states that emerged in the Balkans, Turkey and Albania, aimed at consolidating such relations evolving not only politically but also economically. The political relations between the two states went through various vicissitudes due to a wide range of internal and external factors that affected the development of the political, economic and social life of both countries. Among the problems that emerged were the transition of the Albanian state from a republic to a monarchy, Albania’s rejection of the Ottoman public debt, the issue of property inherited by Albanians in Turkey, and the claims of the Turkish government on the properties inherited from the Ottoman dynasty in Albania. However, it is important to note the significance of a number of treaties between the two countries and the establishment of mutual diplomatic missions between the countries. In addition to these political agreements, efforts were made to underwrite trade agreements. All the events and developments in both countries were presented to the Albanian press of the time, which, in turn, echoed both the economic and social reforms carried out in Turkey as well as the efforts for growth and empowerment of the Albanian state.
