Akdeniz, Braudel için farklı kültürleri bir arada tutmayı ifade ederken Prienne için ise ayrıştırıcı bir özelliğe sahiptir. Tarek Kahlaoui yeni kitabında tam da bu noktadan bir giriş yapmaktadır. Yüzyıllar boyunca Akdeniz etrafında yaşayan ve Akdeniz’in ayrılmaz bir parçası olan Müslümanların denize dair çalışmaları Akdeniz’in tarihini yazan tarihçiler tarafından görülmemiş veya belki de görmezlikten gelinmiştir. Giriş (Introduction) kısmında Brauedel ve Priennean ekolünün Akdeniz’e bakış açısını ele alan Kahlaoui, eserinde üçüncü bir pencere açma gayretindedir. Bu pencere de Akdeniz’in önemli bir parçası olan Müslüman dünyasının ve dünyanın önemli haritacı ve coğrafyacıların denize bakış açısını sunmaktadır.
