Where does Poetry Stand in Relation to Logic?
Esat Burak ŞamanSince the time Plato wanted to banish poetry from his ideal state by accusing Homer of “imitation”, the tension between poetry and philosophy has made itself evident. Our study aims to rethink this highly controversial relationship and to question the relationship between logic, which is the basis of the intellectual sciences, directly connected to logos, and poetry, which is seen as closer to sensation and to “mythos”. This questioning about the possibility of logical thinking through poetics will be realized through language, logic and poetics. In this context, our discussion ground will be the reception of Aristotle’s Poetics, which is accepted as the first work of philosophy of art, in Islamic philosophy, specifically in Avicenna. While commenting on Aristotle, muslim logicians and Avicenna included poetry in logic by placing Poetics in the Organon. This very inclusion invites us to think about the logical status of poetry for Avicenna. In this context, the question we will pursue with Avicenna will be essentially: What is the logical status of poetry and what is the possibility of poetic syllogism? According to Avicenna, poetry is related to the “possibles”, and in this respect, it allows to consider being and non-being together. While poetry addresses imagination, the fact that the imagination is between the sensation and the intellect, makes poetry’s position of “mediator” valuable. In order to show what this position means, we will try to discuss the relationship between poetry and logic through a number of basic themes of the Avicennian philosophy, such as powers of the soul, the relationship between sensation-imagination-intellect, the distinction of essence-existence, the importance of imitation, and types of syllogism. Finally, we will discuss, through particular examples, the place given to the poetry, and examine the possibilities of poetry and the relationship between the poetic and the logical, in terms of the aforementioned theory of poetry.
Şiir Mantığın Neresinde Durur?
Esat Burak ŞamanPlaton Homeros’u ‘taklitle’ uğraşmakla suçlayıp şiiri ideal devletinden kovmak istediğinden beri şiir ve felsefe arasındaki gerilim kendini hissettirmiştir. Çalışmamız, hayli tartışmalı bu ilişkiyi yeniden düşünerek, aklî ilimlerin esasını teşkil eden ve doğrudan logos’la irtibatlı mantık ile hissetmeye ve muthos’a yakın görülen şiir arasındaki ilişkiyi sorgulama amacı taşımaktadır. Şiirle mantıksal akletmenin mümkün olup olmadığına dair yapacağımız bu sorgulamanın dil, poetika ve mantık üçlüsü üzerinden yapılması planlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda tartışma zeminimiz, sanat felsefesinin ilk yapıtı kabul edilen Aristoteles’in Poetika’sının İslam felsefe geleneğinde özel olarak İbn Sînâ tarafından nasıl alımlandığı olacaktır. İslam mantıkçıları ve İbn Sînâ Aristoteles’i şerh ederken, Poetika’yı mantık külliyatının (Organon) içerisine yerleştirerek şiiri mantığın alanına dahil etmiştir. Bu dahlin kendisi bizi şiirin mantıksal statüsü üzerine düşünmeye davet eder. Bu açıdan İbn Sînâ ile birlikte peşine düşeceğimiz soru esas itibariyle şu olacak: Şiir dilinin mantıksal statüsü nasıldır ve şiirsel kıyasın [poetic syllogism] imkânı nedir? İbn Sînâ’ya göre şiir “mümkün” ile ilgilidir, bu bakımdan “mevcud” ile “mevcud olmayanı” birlikte düşünmeye imkân tanır. Şiir muhayyileye (imagination) hitap ederken, nefsin bilme kuvveleri arasında mütehayyilenin his ile akıl arasında yer alması tam da şiirin bu ara-cı konumunu değerli hale getirir. Bu konumun ne anlam ifade ettiğini gösterebilmek adına, çalışmamızda şiir ve mantık ilişkisini nefsin kuvveleri, his-muhayyile-akıl münasebeti, mahiyet-vücud ayrımı, taklidin önemi ve kıyas türleri gibi İbn Sînâ felsefesinin bir dizi temel başlığı üzerinden tartışmaya çalışacağız. Son olarak şiirin konumunu somut örnekler üzerinde mevzubahis şiir teorisi açısından tartışarak şiirin taşıdığı imkânları, şiirsel olanla mantıksal olan arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendireceğiz.
