Sample Films in the Scope of the Teacher Professional Work Program: The Concept of Gender

This study aims to examine a sample of films within the professional work program as prepared by the Ministry of National Education for the September 2017 period in terms of the concept of gender. The aim of the relevant program is to enhance the subject expertise and pedagogical competence of educators and administrators as pivotal participants in education across preschool, primary, secondary, and lifelong learning institutions while also imparting new skills for enriching their general knowledge and finding solutions to the challenges encountered in education and teaching. Considering the broad impact of teachers’ cultures and ideologies and how this extends from their influence on students to wider societal realms are essential in teacher education, as well as not utilizing films that foster prejudice and divisive thoughts. Films are media products that influence individuals’ cognitive frameworks, shape perspectives, and perpetuate perceptions. Therefore, examining the recommended films in the teacher education program has been deemed necessary within the context of the crucial concept of gender, which is pertinent to the stated objectives. This qualitative study utilizes the document analysis method and using the Gender in Films Scale to collect separate data regarding 24 individual films in the teach education program. The study uses Miles and Huberman’s (1994, as cited in Patton, 2002) reliability formula to analyze the data. According to the findings, a high rate of sexist expressions have been found in the analyzed films. The study has concluded that the number of male and female characters in the films; their occupations, hobbies, and activities; and the way they are represented perpetuate common gender biases.

Öğretmen Mesleki Çalışma Programı Kapsamında Örnek Filmler: Toplumsal Cinsiyet Kavramı

Bu çalışmada Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından 2017 Eylül dönemi için hazırlanan mesleki çalışma programı dahilindeki örnek filmlerin toplumsal cinsiyet kavramı açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. İlgili programların hedefi eğitimin en önemli iştirakçilerinden olan öğretmenler ve okul öncesi, ilköğretim, ortaöğretim, hayat boyu öğrenme kurumlarında görevli yöneticilerin alan bilgisi ve pedagojik yeterliliklerini artırmanın yanında, yeni beceriler kazandırmak, genel kültürlerini artırmak, eğitim ve öğretimde karşılaşılan problemlere çözüm yolları bulmaktır. Öğretmen eğitiminde, öğretmenlerin kültür ve fikirleriyle öğrencilerden başlayarak daha geniş bir çevreye yayılan etkileri göz önünde bulundurulmalı, ön yargı ve ayrıştırıcı düşünceleri besleyen filmlerin öğretmen eğitiminde kullanılmasından kaçınılmalıdır. Filmler bireylerin düşünsel yapılarını etkileyen, bakış açısı yerleştiren, algılar üreten ve sürdüren medya ürünleridir. Bu nedenle programda önerilen filmlerin belirtilen amaçlar için önemli bir kavram olan toplumsal cinsiyet bağlamında incelenmesi gerekli görülmüştür. Nitel bir çalışma özelliği gösteren bu araştırmada doküman incelemesi yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Programda yer alan 24 film için Filmlerde Toplumsal Cinsiyet Ölçeği ve Bechdel Testi ayrı ayrı kullanılarak veriler toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde Miles & Huberman’ın güvenilirlik formülü kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre incelenen filmlerde yüksek oranda cinsiyetçi ifadeye rastlanmıştır. Filmlerdeki erkek ve kadın karakter sayısında, karakterlerin meslekleri, hobi ve aktiviteleri ve temsil biçimlerinde genelgeçer toplumsal cinsiyet kabullerinin sürdürüldüğü sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
