In the field of foreign language teaching and, in particular, in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, the incorporation of the intercultural component is viewed as an indispensible prerequisite that facilitates students’learning and acquisition of global communicative competence. The knowledge, the perception and comprehension of the culture (in all its aspects) of the community in which the target language is spoken on the one hand, and the awareness of similarities and differences with the culture of origin, on the other, promote students’intercultural competence and furthermore help them to surpass stereotypes, and also encourage tolerance, respect for cultural diversity and mutual understanding. In the globalized world in which we live, promoting intercultural consciousness, that is, developing intercultural communicative competence emerges as one of the most interesting challenges the field of foreign language teaching faces. In the present paper, after a brief discussion of the ways in which the Common European Framework of Reference and the Curricular Plan of the Cervantes Institute employ the concept of interculturalism, we focus on the ways in which manuals contribute to the development of this competence.

Yabancı dil öğretimine, özellikle İspanyolca’nın ikinci yabancı dil olarak öğretimine (E/LE), kültürlerarası unsurların dahil edilmesi, öğrencilerin dili öğrenmesini ve küresel iletişim yeterliliği kazanmasını hızlandıran vazgeçilmez bir gereksinim olarak görülür. Bir yandan hedef dilin konuşulduğu toplumun (her yönüyle) kültürünün tanınması, algılanması ve kavranması, diğer yandan kendi kültürüyle arasındaki farklılık ve benzerliklerinin bilincinde olunması; kültürlerarası yetkinliğin gelişimini ve bunun sonucu olarak, klişelerin üstesinden gelinmesini, hoşgörüyü, kültürel çeşitliliğe saygıyı ve karşılıklı anlayışı teşvik eder. Yaşadığımız bu küresel dünyada, kültürlerarası farkındalığın teşvik edilmesi, yani, kültürlerarası iletişim becerilerinin geliştirilmesi, yabancı dil öğretiminde karşılaşılan en ilginç zorluklardan biri olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu makalede, Avrupa Ortak Ölçüt Çerçevesi ve Cervantes Enstitüsü Müfredat Programı’nda kültürlerarasılık kavramının nasıl ele alındığının kısa bir değerlendirmesini yaptıktan sonra, E/LE eğitim materyallerinin bu becerinin gelişimine hangi yollarla katkı sağlanabileceği üzerinde duracağız.
