The Freshwater Fish Fauna of İstanbul Province (Turkey)

Gülşah SaçMüfit Özuluğ

With this study, it was aimed to determine the fish fauna of inland waters of İstanbul city located in the Europe and Anatolia and showed a metropolitan characteristic. Fish sampling was carried out in 136 different locations in lotic and lentic biotopes using a DC Electroshocker and seine-net. A total of 38 taxa belonging to 12 families was identified as Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Esocidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobiidae, Percidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae and Syngnathidae. In the study area, Cyprinidae has the highest species diversity with 20 taxa, while Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Esocidae, Gasterosteidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae and Syngnathidae families are represented by one species. The most common found fish species belong to the family Cyprinidae as Petroleuciscus borysthenicus (Kessler, 1859), Rhodeus amarus (Bloch, 1782) and Gobio kovatschevi Chichkoff 1937, respectively. Cobitis strumicae Karaman, 1955, Alburnoides kosswigi Turan, Kaya, Bayçelebi, Bektaş & Ekmekçi, 2017 and Salmo coruhensis Turan, Kottelat & Engin, 2010 were recorded for the first time for İstanbul city fish fauna. The number of inland fish species living in Istanbul was 42 with 4 species that could not be captured in this study.
