A New Potential Invasive Insect Species, Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902) (Hemiptera Cicadellidae), in Türkiye

Ergün BacakVedat Beşkardeş

Objective: This study reports the first record of Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902), a species belonging to the family Cicadellidae, in the fauna of Türkiye. Originally native to Asia, this species has recently been spreading across various regions of Europe and is notable for its invasive characteristics.

Material and Methods: In 2024, insect specimens were collected during entomological surveys conducted in the Sarıyer district of İstanbul, Türkiye. The samples were brought to the laboratory and identified under a microscope.

Results: As a result of the morphological examinations of the specimens collected from walnut (Juglans regia) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior), the species was identified.

Conclusion: Orientus ishidae is considered a potential pest, with the capacity to cause negative impacts on forested areas, urban parks, and fruit trees, both directly and through the phytoplasmas it vectors. Therefore, monitoring the distribution and ecological impact of this species in Türkiye is recommended.
