II.
A Chronicled Note About Mustafa II’s Last Expedition: The Expedition of Zenta and Its Value as a Source
Dilek Seniha Cenez ÜlkerThe period known as the Great Turkish Wars, which started in 1683 and ended with the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, stands out in terms of the 17th-century Ottoman military and political history. The last battle of this military period was the Expedition of Zenta in 1697 and has an important place in Ottoman history as the last campaign with an Ottoman sultan leading the army. According to the chronicles of the period, Mustafa II, who wanted to be remembered as a victorious commander like Suleyman the Magnificent, focused on military activities as a result of the experiences he’d gained since his princedom and success in the wars with Austria in 1695 and 1696 for reclaiming the lands that had been lost after the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Due to the success of these two campaigns, the Sultan wanted to bring the Ottoman Empire to the fore in political, military, economic and social fields by inflicting a final blow on Austria and immediately started preparations for the third campaign. In addition to the logistical preparations for the expedition, the issue of which route the expedition would take would also be one of the factors determining the outcome of the expedition. This study aims to give information about a vakʻanuvis [chronicle] note containing the discussions in the Ottoman war council regarding the Zenta Expedition route, which is found in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister’s Office (BOA) in the Fund of Chroniclers (A.VKN.d). The content of this chronicled note involves the discussions on which route the Zenta Expedition would take. However, another point that makes the note important is the similarity between it and the Zübde-i Vekayiât written by Defterdâr Sarı Mehmed Pasha, which is an important source for 17th-century studies. For this reason, this study will provide detailed information about these similarities and also make comparisons by making use of the information given about the debates in the Ottoman war council in Moritz von Angeli’s (1876) work Feldzüge gegen die Türken 1697 - 1698 und der Karlowitzer Friede 1699. Thus, the information this study has obtained about the Zenta Expedition route will be examined in a multifaceted manner, emphasizing the value of Zübde-i Vekayiât and the importance of Ottoman archival documents once again with regard to the Zenta Expedition.
