Relations Between the Republic of Turkey and the Soviet Russia in the Field of Culture, Science and Aviation During Atatürk’s Era
Ramil ZalyaevThe establishment of treaty relations between the government of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the government of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic in 1921 favoured the development of friendly and cooperative relations and opened up opportunities for the establishment of contacts between two countries in the fields of culture, science and aviation. For instance, the famous Russian artist Evgeniy Lansere stayed in Turkey from June to October 1922 and made drawings and sketches with scenes of life in the Turkish cities he visited. After returning from Turkey, Lansere presented the works he made in Turkey to the public in Moscow and Petrograd and helped to acquaint the people of Soviet Russia with the life and traditions of the people of Turkey in its historical days. In the 1920s, a number of events made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of cultural and scientific relations between the Republic of Turkey and the USSR. These included the first flight between Moscow and Ankara in the history of the relations between Turkey and Russia (1926), the expeditions of the Russian botanist and plant-grower Pyötr Zhukovskiy to Turkey in 1926-1927 and activities of the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries [Vsesoyuznoe obshchestvo svyazey s zagranitsey]. One of the most important examples of cooperation between the two countries in the field of culture and science in the 1930s was the arrival of a Turkish government delegation headed by Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey İsmet Pasha [Inönü] in the USSR in 1932.
