Batten between two ropes: A Life on a SwingThe Swing Motive in Fontane's Effi Briest
In this paper Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest (1895) is analyzed through the main character of the novel, Effi Briest, and the motive of a swing which is located in the garden of her family house. The swing motive is discussed by focusing on its everyday usage, etimologic, symbolic and multicultural meanings. In the fiction the swing is actually located just on the border of the pond and the garden of the house which is at Hohen-Cremmen. Also the rocking chair is located at the veranda of the house in Kessin. In this context, what is the importance of this swing motive in Effi Briest's character and her existence? The swing in the novel is hanging over in the air, at the same time it is stabilized by its poles to the earth and its position on the border of water. This analysis bases the swing on this triple border relation between air, earth and the water.
