AN EVALUATION OF THE “INTERPRETIVE THEORY OF TRANSLATION” ON THE BASIS OF THE IDRC MODEL OF GILE
Emra Durukan, Aşkın ÇokövünThe aim of this study is to evaluate the interpretive theory of meaning by ESIT (Ecole Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs) based on the model of Gile’s IDRC (Interprétation-Décisions, Ressources-contraintes) with the support of translation examples and especially examine its functionality in the frame of translation application and translation education. This examination will provide the embodiment of “resources”, “restrictions”, “decisions” and “reformation methods” which are defined at the IDRC model during the translation interpretation process of the example texts. At the same time, it will be a leading point in putting the IDRC model and Theory of Meaning to the proof and embodying the strong and weak sides of the same theory. The theoretical infrastructure of the present study consists of two phases. With the aim to embody the definition of the translation process in the first phase it is focused on the Theory of Meaning which establishes the fundamentals of the study. In the second phase of the study however, it is focused on the IDRC model and possible restrictions and decisions during the translation interpretation phase of the cognitive process. The translation examples analyzed at the implementation section complete the theoretical part of the study. The translation examples consist of Turkish-German translations from five different professional fields and during the translation process they especially embody the dimension of “limitations”. In the frame of translation analyses which were realized at the implementation section, the qualifications and deficiencies of the Theory of Meaning based on the IDRC model are embodied. Furthermore, it is discussed with what kind of evolutions this approach could be enriched. In addition, the results obtained from the application process also provide data related to the position of the Theory of Meaning based on the IDRC model under the roof of translation science. According to the resulting data, it has been emphasised that the interpretive theory in translation can be completed with some approaches especially with those belonging to the functionalist period.
GİLE’İN IDRC MODELİ TEMELİNDE “YORUMLAYICI ANLAM KURAMI”NIN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ
Emra Durukan, Aşkın ÇokövünBu çalışmanın amacı, Gile’in IDRC (Interprétation-Décisions, Ressources-contraintes) modeli temelinde ESIT’in (Ecole Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs) Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramını, çeviri örnekleri yardımıyla değerlendirmek ve özellikle çeviri uygulaması ve çeviri eğitimi açısında işlevselliğini irdelemektir. Bu irdeleme, örnek metinlerin çeviri sürecinin yorumlama aşamasında IDRC modelinde tanımlanmış olan “kaynakların”, “kısıtlamaların”, “kararların” ve “yeniden oluşturma yöntemlerinin” somutlaşmasını sağlayacaktır; aynı zamanda, gerek IDRC modelini gerekse Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nı sınamak ve Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nın güçlü ve zayıf yönlerini somutlaştırmak açısından çeviri araştırmaları için yol gösterici olacaktır. Çalışmanın kuramsal alt yapısı iki aşamadan oluşmaktadır. Çeviri süreci tanımını somutlaştırmak amacıyla, ilk aşamada çalışmanın temelini oluşturan Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı ele alınmaktadır. Çeviride Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nı geliştiren Seleskovitch ve Lederer’e göre çeviri, anlamak ve anladığını yeniden ifade etmektir. Lederer, çevirinin salt dilbilimsel bir işlevi olmadığını, dilbilim dışı öğelerin de üzerinde durulması gerektiğini savunur. Çalışmanın ikinci aşamasında ise IDRC modeli ve çeviride yorumlama aşamasının bilişsel sürecindeki olası kısıtlamalar ve kararlar ele alınmaktadır. Gile’e göre IDRC modeli, çeviribilimde mevcut kuram ve yöntemleri içerisine alabilecek ve böylece çeviri kuramlarına ilişkin sorunları ortaya koyup çeviribilimi bütünleyici bir kuramsal bakış açısıyla açıklayabilecek niteliktedir. Çalışmada hedeflenen bulgular, uygulama bölümünde irdelenen çeviri örnekleriyle elde edilmektedir. Çeviri örnekleri, beş farklı uzmanlık alanından gerçekleşmiş Türkçe-Almanca çevirilerden oluşmaktadır ve çeviri sürecinde özellikle “kısıtlılıklar” boyutunu somutlaştırmaktadır. Uygulamalı bölümde gerçekleştirilen çeviri irdelemeleri çerçevesinde, IDRC modeli temelinde Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nın yeterlilikleri veya yetersizlikleri somutlaştırılmaktadır ve bu kuramın hangi açılımlarla zenginleştirilebileceği tartışılmaktadır. Bunun dışında uygulamalı bölümde elde edilen bulgular, Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nın IDRC modeli temelinde çeviribilimde hangi konuma yerleştirilebileceğine ilişkin de veri sunmaktadır. Bulgulanan verilere göre, Çeviride Yorumlayıcı Anlam Kuramı’nın özellikle işlevselci döneme ait bazı yaklaşımlarla tamamlanarak zenginleştirilebileceği bulgulanmıştır.
