The Turkish and Arabic Versions of the User’s Manual of Thomas’ Arithmometer

Pierre Ageron

Thomas’ arithmometer was, from 1851 onwards, the first mechanical calculator in the world to be marketed, and it remained the only one for a long time. It was sold with a brief user’s manual in French. Feza Günergun recently discovered and studied a free translation of this manual into Ottoman Turkish. A few years earlier, I had discovered in Morocco an Arabic version of the same manual. The purpose of this note is to compare these two translations. The main difference lies in the treatment of the square root. One striking common point is that the two translators have left off the decimal fractions.
