Medical informatics is a field that is not limited to health institutions, has scientific, technical, economic, legal, and social dimensions, requires effective coordination, and deeply affects health. The field of medical informatics is constantly expanding with new technological systems and digital transformation.
The fact that the field of medical informatics is constantly expanding with new concepts through digital transformation in health leads to the awareness of health service users and the development of new health habits and reflexes.
As in other research fields, Istanbul University aims to increase the potential interest in medical informatics on a scientific basis and to maintain its effectiveness and leadership through its research university identity and multidisciplinary approaches.
Informatics studies, which started with the Haydar Furgaç Data Processing Center at Istanbul University 60 years ago, gained dynamism with the implementation of the Computer Programming Programme (Istanbul Vocational School) in 1986 and the Department of Informatics, which trained students at the postgraduate level, founded in 2003.
These studies were not enough for Istanbul University, and in 2021, the Department of Management Information Systems affiliated with the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Technologies began their activities with undergraduate education programmes. In 2023, the Department of Computer Science under the Faculty of Science was founded and began to implement the basic computer science curriculum at the undergraduate level.
As another action of Istanbul University regarding scientific research, the books MEDICAL INFORMATICS, MEDICAL INFORMATICS II, and MEDICAL INFORMATICS III were published by Istanbul University Press (IU Press) with sections covering artificial intelligence, machine learning, human-machine interaction, data science and big data management, digital transformation in health, modelling of medical systems, bioinformatics, clinical decision support systems, image processing, education and training supported by information technologies, ethics and law of medical informatics, and medical informatics terminology equivalents guide.
As the most recent step of Istanbul University’s scientific publication studies on medical informatics, it was decided to publish this book entitled MEDICAL INFORMATICS IV, which is the fourth volume of the comprehensive book series published, in English. The book was prepared for publication as containing 33 chapters in seven main sections (Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Health Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, Health Sciences and Medical Informatics, Oncology and Medical Informatics, Transplantation and Medical Informatics, Dentistry and Medical Informatics).
I am thrilled to see that stanbul University is growing with another academic contribution, and I congratulate the contributors for the process of sharing MEDICAL INFORMATICS IV in the academic world as an open-access e-book, which covers medical informatics with a multidisciplinary approach. I wish them more success in the future.
